Yoga is an internal practice - noticing what goes on inside as we move - so trying to portray the practice of yoga with photography is impossible. I’m not keen on photographing super complicated shapes and calling it ‘yoga’. Gymnastics or calisthenics yes, but yoga, no - that’s what happens on the inside as we make shapes - it’s not the physical posture itself. The reality is though a lot of yoga teachers still want or need to use imagery for their website; it can get people through the door, and that’s where those people may learn that yoga goes way beyond the physical shapes. Eve and I purposefully used street furniture and brick walls, adapting postures, making different shapes. Was she practicing yoga during the shoot? Maybe, maybe not but you’d have to ask her.
